Mirage at Lake Mungo - The sand dunes look like a city surrounded by big walls

Times are changing and history books have to be rewritten. Melting glacier ice in the European Alps or hot, dry winds in the deserts of Australia have exposed human remains, hidden over thousands of years, puzzling scientists today. The well-preserved "iceman" answered some questions about humans some thousand years ago. It is different with the "Mungo Man" and the "Mungo Woman", found in the far south west of New South Wales, Australia. The old bones make the brain cells of scientists run hot; human remains, over 60,000 years old, physically similar to modern man but without matching DNA.

I visited Lake Mungo for the first time in 1993. The lake dried out approximately 14,000 years ago, due to the earth's magnetic field and climate changes. I felt very special at Lake Mungo, some kind of a strong energy, similar to the vibration at Sacred Valley in the Andes of Peru. In the search for an ideal place to teach vibrational healing and intuition, Lake Mungo was chosen for its extraordinary energy and unique history.

Mungo Man and Mungo Woman

It was in 1969 when cremated remains were found in the lunette on the western shores of Lake Mungo. Over 170 bone fragments, after reassembling, turned out to be the remains of a young female adult, the "Mungo Woman". Carbon dating at the time suggested an age of 28,000 to 32,000 years. After further testing, this was soon amended, to about 40,000 years. Five years later, in 1974, and only half a kilometre away from the place where the "Mungo Woman" was found, more human bones were discovered. Shifting sand had exposed the skeletal remains of "Mungo Man". A further interesting discovery was also made. "Mungo Man" was laid to rest with a spiritual, religious burial ritual in red ochre and with the hands interlocked, located over the penis. The red ochre used is not found locally! It is said that this is the oldest ceremonial burial in the world.

"New" History

New scientific evidence suggests that "Mungo Man" is even older, 28,000 years older. New tests were carried out using three separate methods; the optically stimulated luminescence, the electron spin resonance and the uranium series. This investigation resulted in the dramatic "ageing process" of the "Mungo Man" making him 68,000 years old. Maybe new technology in the future will show that "Mungo Man" is even older, who knows. History books have to be rewritten again and I believe not for the last time.

The last word in the debate of "Mungo Man" and "Mungo Woman" is not yet spoken. Scientists found that the DNA of "Mungo Man" does not match the DNA of any other humans. The "Out of Africa" theory, claiming that all humans originate in Africa was certainly not confirmed by the findings.

Maybe one day science will agree and deliver proof of what some Aborigines say, that other races originate from Australia. Are the Aborigines right? If yes, the aboriginal teacher, Eddie, is right when he greets overseas visitors with the words, "White man, welcome back home"!
